  • Here's a wall I want to cut for a doorway. My utility knife has a new blade and my straight-edge is wide (important for safety!!)

  • I am marking the "rough opening" on the wall.

  • Standard interior doors use 3 1/16 x 7 1/16, but check the listing for the cutout of the door you have selected.

  • I have marked exactly the same layout on the interior wall too. Check that the layouts line up with each other. It is surprisingly easy to mix them up

  • Hold down hard on the straight-edge, but cut gently with the knife. Many light cuts are safer and less likely to slip. Make two straight up-and-down cuts along each line in your layout

  • Very gently, make a slow angled cut to clear away a ribbon of wall material. The clearing cut is on the waste side of the straight cut

  • A ribbon will be lifted away. Gentle, careful, safe!

  • Now another straight cut

  • Chop the end of the cut by laying the knife flat on the edge and press down - rocking the knife instead of slicing

  • An angled rocking-cut to take out the "V" at the edge of the wall

  • Each line gets straight cuts and angled cuts

  • Work the corners with the tip using the same rocking-style as on the edge
