        Floor Finish

This slideshow was done using penetrating (oil-based) stain, but latex-based ("water clean up") stains work well too and are faster-drying |

    00. "Stain and Score" is a flooring technique for smooth wooden floors.

    01. penetrating stain, clear top finish, a wide yardstick, and a scribe.

    02. A drenching coat of stain cross-grain to prevent catching 'snags'.

    08. Attach a strip of tape for the scoring guides - just barely attached to the edge.

    10. For a random-width pattern use a transfer stick to make marks the same on both edges of the floor

    12. The scribe is pointed but smooth to dent rather than cut or tear

    13. Push down hard on the ruler. Do two passes with the scribe close to your hand, then move your hand and do two more

    16. Stain floods the grooves, then is wiped completely away from the surface.

    17. This scoring line didn't take as much stain as the others... I am re-scoring then re-staining

    19. A second handful of paper towels gets the last of the surface stain
    StainAndScore/19D.png

    20. The stain is dry, another coat of urethane, the first drenching cross-grain to get the grooves, then brush the finish out with-the-grain.

    21. If the finish is too glossy, sand with-the-grain and buff with furniture oil or paste wax
